Google Video Advertisers No Longer Need to Produce their Own Videos?

In the old days (before this week), if you wanted to serve video ads, you had to produce them yourself. It was as simple as that. Google just turned the advertising world upside down with their new Google Adsense Video Ads. In short, it looks like an advertiser can now serve their ad alongside videos that others have uploaded to YouTube.

A New Medium For Advertisers?

Google Adsense publishers can now earn even more revenue by showing select YouTube videos (with ads of course) on their websites. More than just a new advertising channel, I don’t believe these new video ads are the same as the previous Google Adsense video ads where they were produced by advertisers solely for Adsense publishers. Google’s help section seem to only indicated that the new Google Adsense Video Ads display select YouTube partner videos. There is no mention if the advertisers are also the video owners.

Did Google just offer up a new medium where advertisers no longer need to produce their own videos to serve video ads? Sounds like a massive opportunity for all parties involved – the advertiser, video producer, Adsense publisher and of course, Google.

Endless Marketing Creatives

Can anyone confirm this? If it’s true, then Google’s YouTube purchase was a fantastic move. They basically purchased an endless amount of marketing creatives (user generated videos) to run with their ads. Given Google’s ad rotation & optimization technology, you can bet that their ads will be paired up with the videos that produce the greatest results. Given the amount of data mining on the back end, that is truly mind boggling actually.

Since the new video ads are only offered to publishers located in the US, I have not been able to test them yet. If anyone can confirm my above hunch, please chime in!

Video units may display two types of ads:

– Text overlay ads, which are displayed in the bottom 20% of the video as it plays
– Companion ads, which appear above the video content within the player

The ads displayed can be either contextually targeted or site-targeted, and may be paid on either a cost-per-click or cost-per-thousand impressions basis.

Where does the video content come from?

Video content comes from select YouTube partners who have chosen to make their videos available to publishers in the Adsense network along with targeted advertising.

  1. This is very helpful information. I would think that the videos would have a better response than the normal text ads. I am going to add some video adsense to my blogs. Thanks for sharing this information.
