With the ever changing online medium, sometimes it is crucial not only to develop and invest in new technologies, but it is equally important that we adopt new methodologies. I only have one advice for anyone wanting to pursue a career in this field. ROI is important but so is maintaining your Brand!

Don't be closed to new ideas and new technologies when a suggestion comes in to take the next stride. If it makes sense, go for it!
